Friday Exhale
On looking forward, staying present, and taking the next step.
What if the path forward asks us to stop looking back?
I hiked in a beautiful park this week.
The pathway was narrow, just wide enough to allow one hiker through at a time.
Large rocks interrupted the trail, requiring me to pay attention to where I placed my feet and where I was going.
One step.
Then another.
What I noticed was—I didn’t look back.
I was aware of where I was.
I was paying attention to what was in front of me.
And I kept moving forward.
It made me wonder how often we stay stuck looking back instead of noticing where we are and where we are moving toward.
We revisit conversations.
Choices we made.
Things we wish had happened differently.
People we miss.
Versions of ourselves we once were.
There can be value in looking back. The past holds memories, lessons, people, and experiences that have shaped us.
But we don’t have to stay there.
On the trail, I couldn’t keep my eyes behind me and safely move forward at the same time.
I needed to see the rock beneath my foot.
The bend ahead.
The beauty surrounding me.
The path that was still unfolding.
Perhaps life asks the same of us.
Not to forget where we’ve been.
But to remember where we are.
This weekend, perhaps, when your mind wanders to the past, gently call yourself back.
Notice where you are.
Notice what is in front of you.
And take the next step.
This is our exhale.
What might you notice if, for just a little while, you stopped looking back and looked at the path in front of you?
